Arrival of Visitors

On the morning of March 26 a Canadian Goose blocked the North end of the P.M. Bedroom Gallery parking lot in Naperville, IL. A gander (named Fred by P.M. employees) was strutting through the parking lot and was attacking anything that came near him. Unsure of what was wrong, a second glance of the area proved important. This was when Wilma, a female goose, was spotted laying on her nest near the building. Once she moved off of the nest, the truth was uncovered. It was then realized that she had eggs under her and attacking was Fred’s way of protecting her and the nest.

Fred sees people as a threat to Wilma and the nest and has tried to deter all from getting close. A total of seven goslings’ eggs lay in the nest as far as the staff can currently see. While Fred is protecting the nest, occasionally, Wilma will get off, stretch her legs, turn her eggs, and go out to get some food or water.

Canadian Geese are federally protected wildlife so it would have been very difficult for P.M. to have these birds removed. Fred and Wilma have become a little like family for the P.M. staff and many others at this point. Currently, P.M. has blocked the North end of the parking lot with caution tape so that Fred does not attack unsuspecting customers.

Visit often as P.M. will continue to give a daily account of the countdown to the goslings’ hatching.

Goslings Update - May 1st, 2008

It’s a Girl, it’s a boy, and a girl, and another girl, and a boy! We’re not quite sure how many boys and how many girls there are, but the eggs have hatched. All seven of the eggs that Wilma has been sitting on have hatched! We noticed them around 7:00pm on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Three eggs had already hatched when we spotted them. Fred was the typical nervous and protective father. As we approached from inside the building he was right there to make sure things were safe for the little ones.

Wilma definitely had her wings full. She was still incubating the eggs that hadn’t hatched yet while keeping the new goslings under wing. We did see the goslings scurry out from underneath her and she quickly gathered them back in. One of the broken eggs rolled out of the nest during a gosling retreat and Wilma brought it back to the nest. We were quite puzzled with that since the egg had already produced a gosling.

On Wednesday, April 30, the geese with newly hatched goslings headed towards the pond behind the store. One of the goslings struggled a little to get up and over the curb to go through the field to the pond. He kept trying and finally made it though. One of our customers, Dorothy, stopped by at just the right time to see the geese before they left. She even came out back just to watch them make their journey across the field. It was wonderful to talk with her and see how excited she was to get to see this.

Now all the caution tape, signs, barricades, and other signs warning people about the geese are gone. All that remains is the empty nest and the remains of the egg shells. In a few weeks there will be no trace of the geese at all. Many have been touched by the geese and will forever remember the experience of Fred and Wilma and the seven goslings outside of P.M. Bedroom Gallery, Naperville, IL.

We look forward to seeing your entries in the “Name The Goslings” contest. Check back soon to see who won the mirropane and what the winning names are.
